When 12=3

My daughter drew my attention to this announcement on the Metlink web site:

Route 12 will become bus Route 3 from 4 September 2006. This is to make it easier to see that this is a key route. Bus times are not changing.

Routes 1 and 2, plus the new Route, are the busiest routes in Wellington City.

Catching a bus in Wellington City will now be as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Wellington city buses

I sighed.

I reread the statement “As easy as 1, 2, 3,” and thought “You have got to be kidding,” as a different reality was uppermost in my mind.

Being able to adapt to a change like this is easy for you and me. We read this message and store it into our memory. We may forget initially but we would have the ability to make the connection when the Number 12 Lyall Bay bus we would normally catch turned up as the Number 3 Lyall Bay bus. At the very least we would get on the bus and check with the bus driver that we are on the right bus. This is something we take for granted because it happens naturally for us. However, this is not the case for everyone.

For some people, like my son, this simple change is huge and incredibly confusing. It is far from “As easy as 1, 2, 3.”

It took us at least six months to teach our son to catch the Number 12 bus into the city. We need to now work on reprogramming his thought processes so that he can understand that nothing else has changed except that the 12 has become a 3. He won’t remember this information. He wouldn’t go anywhere near the bus to ask the driver. He wouldn’t ask anyone around him. He would stand at the bus stop waiting for the Number 12 Lyall Bay bus to turn up.

How do people like my son learn about these changes? Who would tell him if we weren’t around? Would you stop to help someone who looked confused waiting for a bus or would you ignore them?

Treasure your ability to be able to do the simplest of things like catching a bus, reading a timetable, or reading a notice. Believe me life becomes unbelievably difficult when you can’t do these things. I am reminded of this on a daily basis.
