Let the light shine

Merry Christmas

“I am the light of the world”
John 8:12

Merry Christmas

We had a relatively quiet Christmas Day this year. It was odd – gathered together were my parents, my husband, and my three children – that was it. I can’t remember the last Christmas where there were so few of us to celebrate this day.

My mother had a candle burning as part of the centrepiece on the table. As I looked at this burning light I was reminded of all the people that weren’t with us at that moment – family and friends scattered all over the world, my sisters and their families that were together up in Auckland, my husband’s family gathered in Wanganui, the family and friends who have died.

The burning candle also reminded me of the light within, which in my case has been struggling to shine lately. I realised the light was still there but it needed nourishment to burn more brightly.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering.
There is a crack in everything,
That’s how the light gets in.
From Anthem by Leonard Cohen (album The Future)

Light connects us to the act of seeing – opening our eyes to what is going on around us – being aware of everyone and everything.

Look for the light in one another and in yourself. Be a light for those in need. Allow this light to burn brightly as a source of hope and inspiration to others. Even when it appears that the light has gone out remember it can be lit again if the desire is there. Do whatever is necessary to re-ignite it because without light there is no life.

May the light shine brightly for you today and throughout the coming year.

Peace and love to all of you.
